The trail begins near some old mine tailings and travels southwest towards a small ridge and then drops down to Pass Creek. The trail follows the creek and passes several beaver ponds that offer good fishing for brook trout. The lake is relatively small and shallow but is well stocked with brook trout.

Directions:

From Poncha Springs, travel west on Highway 50 for 2 miles to County Road 210. CR 210 is located on the left side of the highway. Turn left onto CR 210. A Forest Service sign will indicate access to Little Cochetopa Creek and Pass Creek. Continue traveling for 4 miles to the trailhead.

Parking:

Parking limited to 5-6 passenger vehicles. The turn-around at the end of the road is small and not easily navigated by large vehicles.

Backpacking

This is a great hike for an overnight trip to a secluded high lake. Camping is permitted in several sites located away from the lake. The trail follows the stream as it climbs steadily to the basin.

Day Hiking

The hike to Pass Creek lake is one of the area’s favorite day hikes. The trail is 4 miles in length and climbs steadily to the lake. The lake is relatively shallow and brook trout can be seen swimming along the lake bottom.

OHV Trail Riding

The Pass Creek Trail is open to motorcycles. It is a great ride up to the lake for a day of fishing or a picnic. The trail stops at the lake and the ride is only 8 miles round trip.

ATV’s are not permitted on this trail due to width restrictions.
